About Us
Our Superior Methodology:
Our methodology for medical charity in the developing world is unique. We have pioneered what we call the “entrepreneurial approach”. Stated simply, we develop a local team in each country, and assist them in tailoring their program so as to utilize their strengths and resources. Medical gaps are filled when necessary, but for the most part we allow them to develop something that works for them.
This approach is more cumbersome and some may say even chaotic at first, but the results are undeniably superior. Flexibility, change, and some trial and error are necessary ingredients. We have to nurture our relationship with our overseas doctors. We know that as their confidence and trust in our relationship grows, they become empowered to be forces for good in their own country. Once they catch the vision, they are unstoppable! The world is full of wonderfully qualified professionals who have a passion for charity work. With the proper guidance and direction we are developing these local individuals into extremely effective humanitarian teams. The unsurpassed results of this “entrepreneurial approach” are:
- We use doctors familiar with the language and culture
- We use doctors familiar with the medical procedures (few U.S. doctors see these types of cases in the United States)
- Continuous local follow up (essential when there may be a complication)
- Dramatically lowered costs per procedure
- An improved local medical community
- Charity work that continues throughout the entire year and for years to come
For years, American and European physicians have seen the need for medical help in the third world. These countries could not help themselves and so we did it for them. Annual or semi-annual mission trips were planned. Good things were accomplished. Without the help of these visiting doctors many would have died and many would have suffered needlessly. It was the best we could do. But that was then, for most of these countries their medical community has developed - they now have well-trained doctors. This attitude of us needing to sweep in and save the day is no longer valid. In many cases coming in for a week-long “surgery fest” is nothing short of malpractice.
The currently accepted methodology is more of a business model delivery. It still involves groups of doctors going into foreign countries and doing the work for them. It involves an organization that plans medical expeditions, and creates a medical package that includes supplies, equipment, nurses, and doctors, and then ships them around the world. You will get a fairly controlled and predictable product. However, the high costs are unacceptable and the long-term betterment of the local medical community is negligible or actually worsened. There is no follow-up nor is there time given to test and evaluate the patients prior to surgery. We are told consistently from around the world that the local doctors find these groups very distasteful, and many countries are now actually denying them access.
We invite other organizations to take a hard look at their ultimate goals. Is it to provide medical help to as many as possible, or is it to provide neat opportunities for U.S. doctors to travel? Deseret has pioneered an extremely effective and efficient approach. We invite others to follow our lead.
